A Los Angeles-bound Qantas flight has been diverted to Sydney Airport after a fault alert prompted the pilot to abandon the trip after taking off from Melbourne.

Qantas says QF93 departed Tullamarine airport before 10am on Thursday. It said the diversion was not an emergency situation.

"The indicator fault (light) appeared in the cockpit and, as a precaution, the captain has made a decision to divert to Sydney," a Qantas spokesman told AAP.

The Airbus A380 aircraft, which seats 484 people, was circling east of Sydney and landed around 1pm.
