Heavily-armed police have cornered a gunman in a farm house west of Brisbane after one of their colleagues was shot dead during a dramatic car chase.

A male officer was killed and others received minor injuries in the pursuit after the "wanted man" evaded police in a traffic stop in the Lockyer Valley just before 2pm on Monday.

Police have confirmed the incident took place while police were attempting to intercept a vehicle on Wellers Road at Seventeen Mile.

A police source says the gunman got out of his car during the chase and shot the officer dead before driving down a dirt road in Seventeen Mile, just northwest of Gatton.


The gunman was holed up in a farm house inside a locked-down area and in a siege situation with Special Emergency Response Team officers at sunset.


"He is contained within the exclusion zone," a police spokesman told AAP.


Police declared an emergency situation near the Lockyer State Forrest shortly before 4pm on Monday.

A police officer has been fatally gunned down after pulling over a car west of Brisbane, with a major manhunt underway to find the killer.
 

The shooting took place in the Lockyer Valley.

An armed man remains on the run.

Queensland Police have asked locals to avoid Wallers, Forestry, Ringwood, and Fords Rds near Seventeen Mile.
