Students were left “shocked” after a series of racist signs targeting international students were seen at a pair of Melbourne universities.

University of Melbourne student Lisa Lu shared an image of the flyer on social media, which was taped to a glass entrance door to the Doug McDonnell building on Monday, the ABC reports.

The flyer reportedly said Chinese students who entered the building would be deported.

"I don't know who would do this on the very first day of the new semester," she wrote on Twitter.

"Even [if] it's a joke, IT'S NOT FUNNY AT ALL."

Melbourne University security have since taken down the flyers, giving CCTV images to Victoria Police who are investigating.

Across social media, a number of angry students and staff shared images of the posters.

A university spokesperson told the ABC hatred and intolerance would not be tolerated.

"We are committed to maintaining and strengthening a vibrant, inclusive and respectful campus community in which diversity is recognised, valued and celebrated," they said.

"Our university campus is open to the public. There is no evidence the flyers were produced or distributed by anyone associated with the university."

National Union of Students (NUS) president Sophie Johnston says the posters were also found at Monash University in Clayton.
