A record number of Australians are reporting Centrelink fraud, with the Department of Human Services (DHS) releasing stats showing a spike in the amount of people turning in family and friends.

In NSW, 31,041 tip offs were made to authorities in the 2016/2017 period, with 25,487 investigations in QLD and 21,471 in Victoria.

"It's an epidemic and it needs to be dealt with," Andrew Weisman from the DHS said, reports 9News.

People who commit Centrelink fraud may be prosecuted, and the federal government has recently set up a taskforce in QLD to target the matter.
