The RSPCA is investigating a disturbing image that is circulating on Facebook, showing a woman with a decapitated kangaroo joey in her mouth.

Sydney pig hunter Natalie Cepeniuk posted the image, accompanied by the comment: "I may have deep throated a joey's neck".

She has since defended her actions, saying that she had accidentally run over its mother while hunting and "humanely put the joey out of its misery".

According to Nine News, the NSW RSPCA has said that it is aware of the image and is currently investigating.

While the image is graphic and disturbing, there is no suggestion that any laws have been broken in relation to animal welfare.

The Department of Environment Code of Compliance for kangaroo shooting states that female kangaroos killed must be checked in case they are carrying a joey, and if so, the joey must be killed.
