Animal protection groups say, sadly, a video of a pet staffy being punched, choked and kicked is on the lower scale of the sort of animal abuse inspectors see daily.

The RSPCA Queensland is investigating after the video, which was taken at the Gold Coast's Currumbin beach on Monday, went viral online.

In it, a couple are unloading two dogs from a ute when the male is seen aggressively pulling on the blue staffy's lead, as well as punching and kicking him.

Beachgoer Tara Lee Barry was the one who hit record on the couple, before she posted it on social media and contacted the RSPCA to make a report.

Michael Beatty from the RSPCA says the sad reality is this video isn't even close to the worst that inspectors are seeing often.

"Sadly, in the scheme of things, our inspectors do see some quite horrific acts of blatant and premeditated animal cruelty", he says.

RSPCA Queensland's official Facebook account has also reiterated the fact.

"The investigation is not developed enough to discuss potential charges. This is however, on the lower scale of the sort of cruelty we see on a daily basis."

Beatty says the investigation is still very much ongoing.

"We'll decide after speaking to the people in the video, whether or not charges would or would not be laid"
