The search for a woman who fell overboard from P&O cruise ship Pacific Dawn has been called off, after the passenger fell during rough waves yesterday.

According to government officials, the search was called off at 5am, some 13 hours after she was seen falling over the side of the ship.

The incident happened roughly 150 nautical miles west of New Caledonia.

The cruise liner has circled the area for hours. It was originally bound for a week-long tour of the Pacific Islands, but is now set to be redirected to return to Brisbane.

It is understood that the woman was out on the boat's deck for some fresh air as she was feeling unwell, when a large wave crashed into the ship and took her overboard at roughly 4pm yesterday. Her husband saw the incident and was standing nearby.

"A crew member notified the bridge straight away and the 'man overboard' incident response team was activated immediately," a spokesperson said.

"In line with this response, Pacific Dawn turned around to follow the course it was on at the time of the accident."
