Woolworths has been ordered to pay a New South Wales employee nearly $17,000 after she was attacked by a small yet vicious native bird on her way to work.

Anita Smith sustained a serious eye injury which required surgery after being swooped while attempting to enter the Kiama Village Shopping Centre in May.

The swooping peewee caused what was described in the claim as an "inturned central part of the right eye flap".

According to a Fairfax report, at least 10 people required medical attention due to the pesky bird.

The supermarket giant was ordered to pay the equivalent of 25 weeks of reduced employment, plus medical and rehabilitation bills.

The Workers Compensation Commission found inadequate measures had been taken to deter the dangerous peewee, which was later shot dead.
