Malcolm Turnbull will today reveal details of what's expected to be the biggest infrastructure project in a decade.

A $2 billion dollar expansion of the Snowy Hydro Scheme to boost capacity by 50%, delivering power to an additional 500,000 homes nationally.

The project is expected to take four years, creating thousands of jobs in the process with a feasibility study to be complete by the end of 2017.

No new dams will be built, instead more tunnels and power stations will be created.

It'll be the first extension since the original series of dams and power stations were complete in 1974 at a cost of $840 million.

The expansion will be act as emergency storage for the entire network from South Australia to Queensland.
