Family and friends continue their desperate search for Julian Cadman, 7, who was separated from his mother during the Barcelona terror attack.

The young boy, believed to be from Sydney, hasn't been seen since a van ploughed into a crowd of people in Spain's popular tourist promenade Las Ramblas, injuring more than 100 people and killing 13.

Mother Jom is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

"Julian is seven-years-old and was out with Jom when they were separated, due to the recent terrorist activity," said Julian's grandfather Tony Cadman in a Facebook post.

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack which preceded another strike further south which claimed one life.

The prime suspect in the van attack, 17-year-old Moussa Oukabir, may be one of five men wearing fake explosive belts killed during a shootout with police at Cambrils, however police say that theory is "losing weight" prompting fears he may still be at large.

They say the dual attacks could have been much worse and believe the group may have been planning a large-scale attack involving a truck and gas bombs.

This was thwarted after the house they were inhabiting exploded, destroying their equipment.
