Sydney Man Accused Of Syria ISIS Trip To Fight Charge

A Sydney man accused of wanting to fly to Syria to join Islamic State (ISIS) will fight police charges, according to his lawyer.

Australian-born Moudasser Taleb appeared in Sydney's Central Local Court via video link today charged with preparing for an "lone wolf" styled incursion into a foreign country with the intention to carry out violent acts, Nine News reports.

Police alleging the 22-year-old was planning to buy a ticket to fly to Lebanon or Turkey, following his arrest at Sydney Airport yesterday morning.

Although Mr Taleb did not apply for bail it was formally refused today.

His lawyer Zali Burrows told reporters Mr Taleb would fight the charge. "Of course he will," she said.

Ms Burrows also said her client "hasn't eaten for two days".

Deputy Commissioner Dave Hudson yesterday said Mr Taleb radicalised himself online and had been engaging with people overseas, and authorities don't believe his family had any prior knowledge or links to his alleged attempt to leave Australia.

Mr Taleb is due to appear in Parramatta Local Court on August 15.
