A Sydney man has been sentenced to 45 years behind bars after he was found guilty of raping and murdering his 16-year-old friend.

Aymen Terkmani was found guilty in August for sexually assaulting and killing his friend Mahmoud Hrouk in a vacant home in Fairfield East in May 2015.

NSW Supreme Court Justice Lucy McCallum sentenced Terkmani to a maximum of 45 years in prison with a non-parole period of 33 years.

In her sentencing remarks, Justice McCallum said the case was complicated as Terkman gave no motive or explanation for his actions, noting the “horrific savagery” of the “gruesome” crime.

Justice McCallum had considered a life sentence but took the offender's age into account.
