When it comes to congestion in Australian capitals, Sydney still tops the list with the worst traffic in the country and worse than Paris, New York and Berlin on the world stage.

The TomTom Traffic Index 2017 shows in peak times, traffic congestion in Sydney adds 41 minutes to a trip which over a year equates to 156 hours or four working weeks stuck behind the wheel.

Congestion levels have risen to 39%, a 3% increase from last year and a 39% increase since 2008.

Compared to other Aussie capitals, Melbourne's recorded the biggest increase of 4% from last year with congestion levels now at 33%.

Further down the rankings is Hobart with a congestion level of 32%, Brisbane at 28% and Adelaide at 27% as for Perth, traffic congestion has remained static since 2014.
