Reports have emerged that the Australian who remains unaccounted for after the terror attack in Barcelona overnight is a Sydney schoolboy.

According to a report by Seven News, it is believed that the schoolboy was in Spain with his family for a wedding.

Nine News has identified the child as 7-year-old Julian Cadman.

A van drove through hundreds of people in the popular tourist area of Las Ramblas, with at least 16 people killed.

Six Australians were injured in the attack, with two women in a serious but stable condition, and two men discharged from hospital.

Five terrorists were later shot dead by police, who were in a car wearing suicide bomb belts and potentially about to carry out another attack.

"We stand in absolute, resolute solidarity with the people of Spain in the fight against Islamist terrorism," PM Malcolm Turnbull said earlier today.

"This is a global battle against terrorism."

This is the eighth terror attack to involve the use of a vehicle in Europe in the span of three years.
