Two teenagers have somehow managed to walk away with just cuts and bruises after their 4WD plunged off a cliff and fell 20 metres onto rocks below at Forster on the NSW Mid North Coast last night.

Police have been told the 17-year-old driver and his 16-year-old female passenger had been sitting in the car in the car park at Second Head Lookout 9.30pm, when they went to drive away, but the vehicle instead crashed through the barrier and fell down the cliff face landing 20 metres below on rocks.

Authorities say it was only a large boulder that stopped the RAV4 from continuing into the ocean.

The teen later told police the driver had accidentally put the car into drive instead of reverse, while the car will be retrieved today with a crane.
