The sporting world was shocked this morning by the news of the untimely passing of legendary broadcaster Drew Morphett at the age of 69 overnight.

Morphett — who started his work in sport broadcasting in Sydney in 1966 — was probably best known to AFL fans for his TV work with Channel 7 during the 90s and for hosting the ABC’s The Winners during the 80s.

In his nearly 50 year broadcasting career, Morphett was also an iconic cricket broadcaster, covering Tests with ABC radio, and also commentated on tennis, basketball, golf and six Olympic Games.

Morphett was given an Order of Australia in 2014.

As the news of his death filtered through, the sporting world reacted with shock and grief.
