The Ute Is King Of Aussie Roads

Who's Got One?

The HiLux Family

Once upon a time it was the Holden Commodore or Ford Falcon that Aussies were buying in their (pardon the pun) droves.

Not anymore.

SUV's (Four Wheel Drives), small cars and utes are selling like hot cakes and Australians can't get enough of them.

But the bigger story is this - we're buying more utes than small cars.

About a thousand more were driven out of the showroom in August.

Stats from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries are tallied on manufacturer reports rather than registrations.

While some take these figures with a grain of salt, it's clear the ute (or the pick-up, the dual cab, whatever you want to call it) is as popular as it's ever been.

The buyer's choice?

The Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger, which top the sales charts.

There's barely a construction site or workshop across Australia that doesn't have one of these models parked on it nowadays as tradies upgrade their rides.

Chief HiLux rival, the Ford Ranger

SUV sales for August weren't too shabby either.

About 2500 more were steered off car yards for the month compared to passenger cars as soccer mums opt for cargo space and ride height.

It's turning out to be a bumper year of riches for the car industry which is on track to record new-car sales.

And if the August numbers continue, then the Toyota HiLux will become the first ute to top the charts as the best-selling vehicle in Australia, two-years running.

AUSSIE TOP FIVE CARS IN AUGUST

Toyota HiLux 4287
Ford Ranger 3588
Toyota Corolla 2948
Hyundai Tucson 2206
Mazda 3 2163
