The world's worst airlines have been named and shamed after receiving just one star out of a possible seven.

According to data pulled together by Airlineratings.com, Nepal is the biggest offenders with four airlines - Buddha Air, Nepal Airlines, Tara Air and Yeti Airline - appearing on the list.

(Astonishing, really, that an airline named after the Abominable Snowman hasn't been deemed as terribly safe.)

Air Koryo (North Korea), Trigana Air Service (Indonesia) and Blue Wing Airlines (Suriname) rounded out the bottom seven after being graded on criteria like crash records, serious incidents, fleet age and audits from aviation bodies and the government.

Happily, Australia appeared not once but twice in the 20 safest airlines thanks to Qantas and Virgin Australia's seven-star ratings.

They join Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines, All Nippon Airways, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, EVA Air, Finnair, Hawaiian Airlines, Japan Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, Royal Jordanian Airlines, Scandinavian Airline System, Singapore Airlines, Swiss, Virgin Atlantic in being deemed as the world's safest.

“Certainly, air travel is safer today than at any time in history but passengers still need to know which are the best of the best,” Airlineratings.com editor-in-chief Geoffrey Thomas said.

“Our top 20 safest airlines are always at the forefront of safety innovation, operational excellence and the launching of new more advanced aircraft like the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787.”

Jetstar Australia also have something to be proud of; the budget airline was named as one of 10 low-cost carriers with excellent safety records.
