 More than 2.5 million potentially deadly Takata airbags have now been removed from 1.6 million Australian cars.

But there are still 1.4 million of the faulty airbags yet to be replaced, a senior bureaucrat from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has told a Senate estimates hearing in Canberra.

About 100,000 of the airbags are being replaced on average across the country each month as part of a massive recall, the competition watchdog's Tim Grimwade said on Thursday.
