Today marks 99 years since World War I ended, with November 11 a time to reflect on the contribution of service people.

At 11am today, the 11th of November, Australians are encouraged to take a moment to remember those who have been affected by war.

"All we ask of people is if they cannot attend a service or anything like that, to just take one minute of their time at around 11am on the 11th day to actually remember all those who've served in war," RSL National President Robert Dick told Triple M.

"It doesn't take much to just stop and think, and in a way be thankful for the sacrifice that these people made at that time which gave us the freedom that we have today.

"All the money raised from the sale of poppies actually goes towards supporting our veteran community - the wives, children and war widows.

"It comes down to a very simple saying that we used to have in the military, and we still have to this day: when you sign up for the military, you're signing a blank cheque with your life.”
