Widespread refunds are on the way, with Optus following Telstra's lead and reimbursing customers who have been charged for internet speeds that are unattainable on the National Broadband Network.

Telstra said in May that it would refund approximately 8000 customers for the same NBN speed issues.

Yesterday, Optus announced that it will implement a similar process to work out how many customers have been affected by the issue, but according to the Australian, will not disclose the total number of people impacted.

Criticism of the NBN has largely stemmed from speed-related issues, with many complaints surfacing that new connections are slower than previous ADSL systems.
