Horse trainer Aidan O'Brien has confirmed that his colt The Cliffsofmoher died during the Melbourne Cup.

The Irish five-year-old fractured his right shoulder just 600m into the race but medical staff were unable to save him.

Speaking afterwards, O'Brien said it was "very sad".

"Unfortunately these things can happen to a horse galloping around the field at home," he said.

"It's very said. It could have been worse, Ryan [Moore] could have taken a fall off him, someone could have been seriously injured."

Channel 7 commentator Bruce McAvaney said it was a "tragedy" while his colleague Richard Freedman had made a point of mentioning how agitated The Cliffsofmoher looked before the race.

"Cliffsofmoher, he's melting like an ice-cream at the moment," Freedman said as the horses took to the track. "He's really sweating up badly."
