The Family Court has ruled that transgender teenagers no longer need court approval to access Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

Previously, transgender children and their families had to apply in the Family Court to be granted access to the treatment.

This would often be an expensive process, and according to SBS, could also be harmful emotionally and psychologically to the child.

Under the Family Court ruling, transgender young people will only require permission from parents or guardians and their doctor before undergoing the treatment.

It is understood that 60 cases of transgender children needing hormone therapy have been received by the Family Court since 2004.
