Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has stripped Melbourne's City Of Yarra council of the right to hold any citizenship ceremonies after it voted last night to no longer recognise January 26 as Australia Day.

In Parliament today Mr Turnbull called the decision "utterly out of step" with Australian values.

The Prime Minister said that Australians should be proud to celebrate Australia Day.

"They are seeking to take a day which unites Australia and turn it into one which divides us," he said.
