Twitter is going places – well, 140 extra characters to be exact - with the social media platform announcing they’ll start letting users tweet up to 280 characters.

Following a trial back in September, Twitter product manager Aliza Rosen today confirmed the change would be introduced to all English-speaking users, alongside most other languages.

"We — and many of you — were concerned that timelines may fill up with 280 character Tweets, and people with the new limit would always use up the whole space,” she said.

Instead, the trial found only five per cent of tweets to were longer than 140 characters – with the change also predicted to encourage more interaction on the platform itself.

"In addition to more Tweeting, people who had more room to Tweet received more engagement (Likes, Retweets, @mentions), got more followers, and spent more time on Twitter", Rosen added.

"People in the experiment told us that a higher character limit made them feel more satisfied with how they expressed themselves on Twitter, their ability to find good content, and Twitter overall."
