Uber is set to raise fares in Australia.

A 55-cent booking fee will be applied to all rides from June 9 to help with operational costs. Minimum fares will also be increased, reportedly due to pressure from drivers.

50c of the booking fee will be passed on to Uber, and 5c will go to the ATO as GST.

According to Fairfax, the minimum fare in Sydney will raise from $8 to $9, including the booking fee. Brisbane and Melbourne will see an increase from $6 to $7.50.

An Uber spokesperson told The Australian Financial Review that minimum fares would increase in all Australian cities.

In a statement RideShare Drivers United said that the increase was a step in the right direction, but that drivers were still earning below minimum wage.

“Minimum fare trips make a very small percentage of trips in most cases,” they said. “This very small minimum fare increase is not really going to make much of a difference to drivers bottom line. Most drivers we talked to view this latest Uber increase as an insult and a slap in the face.”
