A bad phone call?

No, it's just fake news.

That was US President Donald Trump's response when sitting alongside Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier docked on New York's Hudson River on Thursday.

"We get along great," Mr Trump told reporters.

"Always do."

Not only that, but the refugee deal with Australia that the president described on Twitter as a "dumb deal" was also OK.

"Oh yeah sure," Mr Trump said when asked about the US accepting refugees held on Manus Island and Nauru.

"That's all worked out."

Mr Trump and Mr Turnbull are expected to meet for 45 minutes before delivering speeches at a dinner on the Intrepid to mark the 75th anniversary of the Australian-US victory over Japan in the Battle for the Coral Sea.

Mr Turnbull described what a great victory it was for the allies, with Mr Trump nodding in agreement.

The two leaders did their best to show they were great mates.

"It's great to be with you," Mr Trump told the prime minister.

Asked about Australia, Mr Trump raved.

"One of the most beautiful places on Earth," he said.

When questions turned to the January 28 call over the refugee deal Mr Trump declared: "We did a great call."

Then with a smile he offered that the two leaders were not meek.

"We're not babies," the president said.

And that Washington Post report that detailed his angry words during that January call with Mr Turnbull?

"A little bit of fake news," Mr Trump said.
