The government has released a statement for people planning to travel to Russia, warning that due to "heightened political tensions" there is an increased risk for tourists.

This comes as the World Cup looms closer, which is being held in Russia later this year.

Speaking on the matter following the expelling of two Russian diplomats from Australia, Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack has advised those without strict travel plans to reconsider.

"There is obviously a diplomatic row at the moment after those nerve agents were used," he told the ABC.

"If you don't need to travel to Russia at the moment, then think twice, think three times about doing it."

Due to heightened political tensions, you should be aware of the possibility of anti-Western sentiment or harassment. While the Australian Government is not aware of any increased difficulties for Australians travelling in Russia at this time, you should follow the security and political situation closely and keep up to date with this travel advice. Remain vigilant, avoid any protests or demonstrations and avoid commenting publicly on political developments. The level of our advice has not changed. Exercise a high degree of caution in Russia. Higher levels apply in some parts of the country.
