Victoria Police say it could be some days before they're able to identify the human remains found in the Victoria's Macedon Regional Park on Monday.

Authorities were called to the grim scene just after midday, when a bush walker stumbled across the badly decomposed body under some logs. Investigators spent about 8 hours combing the scene for clues, before forensic crews removed the remains for testing. It's expected a major line search of the area will be carried out today to check for further evidence.

So where's the twist? The find was made about 30kms from where police last conducted a search for missing Avondale Heights mother Karen Ristevski. They honed in on the location mobile phone data showed her handset was last connected to a cell tower in the area.

She was last seen back in June 2016 after an argument with her husband. The 47 year old has not used her mobile phone or bank accounts since vanishing.

A witness has reportedly also told police they saw a man in the area with a shovel some time ago.

More to come...
