ABC News Australia is reporting that Woolworths has announced plans to phase out single-use plastic bags over the next 12 months.

The company currently gives out approx. 3.2 billion plastic bags per year.

The decision will affect Woolworths stores in Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia, with bans on plastic bags having already been implemented in South Australia and Tasmania, and Queensland plans to follow suit next year.

More durable, re-usable plastic bags will reportedly be made available by Woolworths at a cost of 15 cents.

“From an actual cost dollar point of view we see the overall program for us being pretty much cost-neutral,” said spokesman Michael James.
