The Hunter is bracing for two days of absolute scorchers.
Several areas including Maitland, Cessnock, Wallsend and parts of Lake Macquarie are forecast to receive temperatures in excess of 40 degrees today.
While the mercury is predicted to go as high as 42 degrees in parts on Wednesday.
Meteorologist Craig McIntosh from Weatherzone says we won't receive a reprieve from the heat until late Wednesday night.
"The hot, dry north-northwest winds will start driving heat over the Hunter. It's slowly been building up over the interior of Australia for a little while."
"Into late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning we will feel the winds start to turn southerly as the front passes to the south, and there'll be a dramatic drop in temperature associated with that."
