"I Can Feel The Building Shudder": Rutherford Couple Stuck in Cyclone

A daydream has turned into a nightmare for a Rutherford couple stranded in far north Queensland by Severe Cyclone Debbie.

Wally and Leanne Morris travelled to Daydream Island in the Whitsundays, to celebrate their 39th wedding anniversary.

They were meant to fly back home on Monday, however their flight was cancelled due to the monster storm.

STUCK: it's definitely not the holiday Wally and Leanne were expecting.

The couple is now in lock down, trapped inside their room at the luxury resort as the island is buffeted by gale-force winds.

"We tried to go down for breakfast and there are windows smashed in the hallways," said Wally. "We can't do a thing at the moment."

Despite the drama, Wally insists they feel completely safe.

"They reckon the rooms are as good as the cyclone room's that they've got other people in."

Nearby Hamilton Island recorded wind gusts of 232km/h.

The cyclone is expected to make landfall at Bowen on Tuesday afternoon.
