Lord Mayor: More Ferry Stops Needed

Newcastle's Lord Mayor wants the Stockton Ferry to add a couple of extra stops around the Harbour.

Nuatali Nelmes believes the ferry should head to Wickham to link up with the recently opened Newcastle Interchange.

She also thinks there's a need for an additional stop at the North Stockton boat ramp, to ease parking pressure at the existing terminal and to pick up passengers coming from the north.

"There's only so much land we have available for car parking on the prime real estate that is Stockton Foreshore," she said.

"While there is some room to expand the car park there to cater for those commuters, it's only going to be limited as time goes on."

The Stockton Ferry, which is run and operated by Keolis Downer, currently only travels between Stockton and Queens Wharf.

Latest NSW Government figures show more than 42,000 passengers caught the ferry in July this year, double the number from the same time last year.

Around 480,000 people took a trip on the ferry over 12 months.
