Petrol Prices Soar Across the Hunter

We're being told to shop around for cheap petrol in the Hunter, as the cost of unleaded soars.

Service stations at Islington, Mayfield, Rutherford, Beresfield, Salamander Bay, Raymond Terrace, Morisset, Toronto, Teralba, Mount Hutton and Gateshead were selling E10 fuel for 159.9 cents/litre on Thursday morning.

The NRMA says that's the most expensive petrol has been in the Hunter in at least three years.

"The average price in Newcastle right now is 146 cents/litre which is about nine cents a litre cheaper than Sydney, so there are some bargains to be had but they are hard to find," spokesperson Peter Khoury said.

Surging petrol prices are being blamed on continued cuts by oil producing countries, ongoing tensions in the Middle East and the possibility of sanctions against Russia, Iran and Venezuela.

"We have no control over those factors here in Australia, but unfortunately they do impact on the price locally," Mr Khoury said.

There is still some cheap petrol around, including 137.9 cents/litre at the Tarro Metro and Beresfield United.
