Picture this, you've returned home on Saturday evening to hear strange noises in the backyard and man wearing all black peering through a gap in the doorway.

So, what do you do?

Well, according to Nine News, one Spearwood woman decided to take matters into her own hands when it happened to her.

18-year-old Teal Smith has been hailed a hero for her actions.

Teal chased the alleged intruder through several backyards and over fences before eventually taking him down, pinning him to the ground and performing a citizen's arrest.

"I ended up bumping into him and falling to the floor," she's told Nine.

A 42-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences including aggravated burglary and stealing.

Police admit she was brave to do so, but obviously encourage people to consider their personal safety before they go after intruders in the future.
