Massive news for people in #Perth who have a thing for ‘Kustom Kulture’.
You know… the ‘greasers’ of the 50s, the ‘drag racers’ of the 60s or the lowriders of the 70s…
There is a festival happening at the PCEC this weekend, celebrating all things 'kustom kulture'. The vehicles, fashions, artworks, tattoos and hairstyles of lovers of custom cars and motor cycles in Southern California from the 1950s.
It’s called The West Coast Lowdown, and is the brainchild of local digital entrepreneur and hot rod aficionado, David Jardine, who got inspired by similar events in the US such as Ink ‘n’ Iron and Viva Las Vegas.
Although Jardine expects the lowriders to be the star attraction, there are a heap of things on offer to check out, including:
- Featured Builders
Six cars and six bikes created by the best custom builders in Western Australia.
- Kavalcade of Kustoms
A WA first for an indoor event – each featured builder will be drive their vehicle into the festival pavilion and parade live in front of a grandstand audience.
- Lowdown Invitational
Up to 30 handpicked custom cars and bikes from across Australia participating in this invite-only event.
- Bike Build Off
20 of the State’s top custom bike builders compete under strict conditions to become the top Bike Builder for West Coast Lowdown 2017. With a $10k budget this challenge shows what can be done by the average builder with limited funds.
- Dolled-Up Dames Pinup Workshop
A one-off pinup beauty workshop taught by the very engaging, newly crowned Miss Viva Las Vegas, Miss Monique Sweet.
- Tattoo Alley
A min tattoo convention featuring up to 30 of Australia’s top artists tattooing live right in the heart of the West Coast Lowdown.
- Skateboard Ramp
Giving another nod to the crossover between skate, punk and hot rodding, this year’s event includes a half pipe skate ramp inside the show. Skate addicts are encouraged to bring along their board and enjoy the ramp – fully supervised by local professionals.
- Miss West Coast Lowdown
A pageant with a difference – ladies with pin-up appeal vying for the Miss West Coast Lowdown title.
Tickets for the West Coast Lowdown – hosted by Australia’s very own Kustom Kulture icon, Betty Butcher, are available at www.westcoastlowdown.com.au
