It's going on tour!

The People's Cup races into West Wyalong

West Wyalong will host the $200,000 18-carat gold Emirates Melbourne Cup on the 1st of July, as part of its milestone fifteenth annual tour of Australia and New Zealand.

Whilst in West Wyalong, the Cup will engage in a number of exciting activities including a community breakfast put on by the West Wyalong Rotary Club (Tickets $7), a special street parade and Mayoral reception down Main Street featuring the Australian Army Band – Kapooka, Business House Fashions will be hosting a champagne lunch (Tickets $25 at Majors Mulch), and to finish the night the West Wyalong Services & Citizens Club will be hosting a Fashions on the Field dinner (Tickets $25 at West Wyalong Jewellers).

Ray Smith, General Manager, Bland Shire Council said the community is looking forward to coming together to celebrate the iconic trophy.

“It’s wonderful to see the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour returning to West Wyalong. We can proudly say that West Wyalong is the home to this year’s trophy. The gold used to make the 2017 Emirates Melbourne Cup Trophy was mined at Evolution Cowal Gold mine in Bland Shire, West Wyalong. That will always give West Wyalong a special connection to the Cup.”

Racing legend, John Letts, will join the Tour and share firsthand his unique Emirates Melbourne Cup story.

VRC Chairman Amanda Elliott said the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) is excited to bring the magic of the Emirates Melbourne Cup to the people of West Wyalong.

“The Melbourne Cup is an Australian cultural icon and is truly the People’s Cup, so we’re delighted to share it with the people, on this its fifteenth annual tour of Australia and New Zealand,” Mrs Elliott said.

The famous trophy will visit 31 destinations across Australia and New Zealand, starting in West Wyalong in regional NSW, where the gold used by ABC Bullion to make the trophy is mined, before returning to Flemington for ‘The ‘Race That Stops A Nation’™ on the first Tuesday in November.

Since its inaugural year, the Tour has travelled more than 494,000 kilometres and visited more than 377 regional, rural and metropolitan destinations, providing communities with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the magic of the Emirates Melbourne Cup firsthand.

Community members are encouraged to upload photos with the Cup to Facebook, using the hashtags #PeoplesCup and #EmiratesMelbourneCup, for the chance to win a trip for two to Flemington for the running of the 2017 Emirates Melbourne Cup.
