Wagga City Council says the city's annual roads maintenance program is firing up this week, with one and a half million dollars to be spent on resurfacing local roads over the next three months.

Twelve suburbs are on the list, as well as some rural areas, Lake Albert is the first cab off the rank, with works having started there yesterday.

Lee Shoemark from Council says resealing involves applying a new coat of bitumen and stone aggregate to the existing surface, which helps extend the life of the road and prevent potholes.
