Wagga City Council says it's started work planting 900 new trees across the city and suburbs, as part of it's winter street tree planting program.

Boorooma, Estella Rise, Bourkelands, Tatton and Lloyd are the first areas getting attention, Council saying by the time this program is complete, Wagga will be home to more then 61,000 street trees.

Director of Commercial Operations Caroline Angel says not only do tree-lined streets look good, they provide a greed corridor for birds and wildlife, and helping to combat the 'heat island effect' in summer.
