Wagga City Council says it will continue to work with property owners as it tries to recoup more than $4.5 Million in unpaid rates, despite receiving a report to begin the land sale process.

Under NSW legislation, councils can sell properties with outstanding rates balances of more than 5 years.

In Wagga, more than $250,000 in unpaid rates has been outstanding for 5 years or more.

Council says though, it is hopeful that the property owners in question will work with staff and come to an agreement, saying the council can only wear the financial burden for so long, before it begins to have an impact on other ratepayers and residents.
