Fire Danger Period Starts Early

The Rural Fire Service has announced that the Riverina Zone will commence the Bushfire Danger period one month early this year due to unseasonably dry conditions.

It means the Wagga, Junee, Coolamon and Lockhart Local Government Areas will enter the statutory Bushfire Danger Period on Sunday, October 1.

Anyone wanting to light a fire in the open during the Danger Period will need a permit from their local fire control centre.

Meanwhile, the dry winter means kangaroos are now appearing on our highways more frequently as they search for food and water.

Worsened by the fact it's mating season, WIRES Wildlife and Rescue are warning locals to take the necessary precautions when getting behind the wheel to protect themselves and our native animals

Kristee Garret from WIRES says we should try to avoid kangaroos but only if it's safe to do so.
