Call for government action

The NSW Federation of Housing Associations says growing rental stress across NSW highlights the urgent need for action from all levels of government, to create more social and affordable housing for communities like those here in the Riverina.

The Federation is the state’s peak not for profit housing body, with CEO Wendy Hayhurst saying it’s no surprise that there’s not a single property affordable for a young family on minimum wage or government support in Sydney, however a new report from Anglicare shows housing stress is also biting hard in regional areas.

Ms Hayhurst says even in towns like Wagga, a job seeker on Newstart can’t find an affordable place to rent while they look for work.
