Federal Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has paid a visit to Wagga, arriving in the city yesterday to meet with the local Yazidi community during their New Year celebrations.

More than 200 Yazidi refugees now call Wagga home, and more travelled here for the celebrations, having escaped persecution and genocide in Iraq and Syria.

While in town he also took questions on the government's controversial 457 visa changes, and the immigration case of Angela Aseka and her seven year old daughter daughter Esperanca, facing the prospect of deportation to Kenya.

Mr Dutton declined to comment on the latter, saying it will have to go before the court first.
