The Murray Darling Basin Authority has recommended an adjustment of 605 gigalitres to the Sustainable Diversion Limits in the Southern Basin, reducing the water recovery target for the region.

The Authority has written to Minister Barnaby Joyce to propose the reduction, which would require a change to the Basin Plan under the Water Act.

It’s based on an assessment of the environmental benefits that could be achieved through a package of projects nominated and led by Basin state governments that save water.

It means that more water can remain in the system for other users including households, industry and irrigated agriculture.
