Cootamundra police have praised the actions of a man who risked his own life to help a man trapped inside a burning car on the Olympic Highway between Cootamundra and Wallendbeen.

Michael Van Baast was driving along the stretch of road shortly before 2am on Sunday when he saw a ute had collided with a tree, and realised there was someone trapped inside.

The driver, a man in his early 20s was trapped by his legs, and as the fire from under the hood spread to dashboard, Mr Van Baast bent down the car door and pulled the driver out by sheer force.

The man suffered burns and a broken leg, he underwent surgery yesterday and is now recovering.
