It appears messages about the dangers of using mobile phones while driving still aren't getting through, with police across NSW issuing more than 1,200 infringements for the offence in a single day.

Releasing their results from Operation Compliance 1, conducted on Wednesday, officers say while mobile phone offences topped the list, they also caught plenty driving defective vehicles, with 586 infringements issued, and 137 people booked for not keeping left.

Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy says despite numerous warnings and the obvious dangers, drivers still aren't getting the message not to text and drive.
