20 Junior Medical officers will undertake part of their on-the-job training here in the Riverina, with the Federal Government providing $1.3 million to the Murrumbidgee Local Health District.

Minister for Rural Health, Senator Bridget McKenzie was in Wagga on Friday to make the announcement, with the money to enable four local general practices to each take five medical interns a year on rotation.

Senator McKenzie says having these junior doctors training here benefits local communities, and also gives trainees a taste of general practice in a country town, making them much more likely to stay rural once they’re fully qualified.
