The Murrumbidgee Local Health District is warning residents that the recent rains and warmer weather are expected to see mosquito numbers increase.

Director of Public Health, Tracey Oakman says now is a good time to prepare your home, checking window and door screens for tears, and emptying out any containers lying around the house and yard with water in them.

Ms Oakman says every year the Public Health Unit receives notifications of local residents contracting Ross River and Barmah Forest Virus, which can cause persistent and debilitating symptoms like joint aches and pains, fever, chills, headache and sometimes a rash.

There is no specific treatment for the viruses, and the best way to avoid contracting them is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
