Emergency service workers across the Riverina are welcoming a new road rule coming into effect across the NSW, that will require motorists to slow down to 40 kilometres per hour when passing emergency vehicles on the roadside.

It’s aimed at providing extra protection for police, firefighters, Paramedics, State Emergency Service personnel and rescue volunteers.

Roads Minister Melinda Pavey says the rule will begin as a 12 month trial from September 1, and will apply on all roads when an emergency vehicle is stopped and has its red or blue lights flashing.

An education campaign will be run over the coming months, informing drivers of the change.
