Staffing for Coolamon’s new ambulance station looks set to become a battleground of the upcoming Cootamundra by-election, with the Australian Paramedics Association NSW preparing to campaign against a volunteer-based staffing model.

President Steve Pearce says retiring Nationals MP Katrina Hodgkinson was hoodwinked by NSW Ambulance bureaucrats into believing volunteers would be able to do the jobs of properly trained paramedics.

Mr Pearce says the best possible care was delivered when two trained paramedics arrive at the scene of an accident or medical emergency, and that the volunteer-based model will put patient safety at risk.
